Explorers Team Member

Explorers is Scouting at its most self-directed. The young people decide what the programme looks like — a skill, a project, a speaker, the next expedition — and the adults are there to make it happen, keep it safe and occasionally point out that the map is upside down.

We’re looking for one or two adults to join the team behind our Explorer Unit for 14–18 year olds. It’s an established unit with a settled routine and an experienced team around you, so you’d be joining something that already works rather than building from scratch.

What you’d be doing

• Helping run the weekly Monday evening session — whatever the unit has planned
• Supporting Explorers through their Duke of Edinburgh sections, top awards and Young Leader training
• Getting out of the hall — weekend expeditions, camps and bigger adventures
• Being a steady, sensible adult for young people at the age where that counts for most

Who it’s for

No Scouting experience needed. This one suits people who’d rather back young people’s ideas than run the show — a lot of the job is asking good questions, keeping things safe and then letting them get on with it. If you’ve got a particular skill (hillwalking, climbing, cooking, first aid, anything practical) you’ll find plenty of use for it, but it isn’t a requirement.

Because Explorers are older, it’s a different job from the younger sections — more conversation and planning alongside them, less chasing round the hall. As a Team Member it’s also a lower-commitment way in than leading, and a good first step into volunteering with Scouts.

We meet at St Andrew’s Church hall on Bredisholm Road in Baillieston, in Glasgow’s East End. It’s a church hall, but Scouts is open to everyone — all faiths and none. We’re an inclusive group, not a religious one.

We provide all the training you need (including safeguarding and first aid) free of charge, full support from the wider team, and we cover your PVG/Disclosure check. You’ll never be doing it alone.
